As a believer in Jesus Christ, it is my joy and privilege to read God’s Word on a daily basis. As a graphic designer, it is a delight when work and faith overlap. A friend of mine recently called asking for a verse design. This card with biblical truth would feature the second half of 1 Corinthians 15:11 “...so we preach and so you believed.”

Concept
Because of what this verse says, it was only appropriate for this card to include an image of God’s Word - the Bible. This source of biblical sermon content is part of the background. Emily also wanted the graphic to include an image of something flourishing, thriving, and growing. Happy to accommodate, we decided on the image of a wildflower. This request reminded me of Isaiah 40:8 which says “The grass withers, the flower fades, but the word of our God will stand forever.”
Layout
Since the main focus of this card is the verse, I recognized the need for dominant typography in the verse design. The emphasis on this part of the verse is the two verbs: “preach” and “believed.” Because of this, I knew that these two words needed prominence. Using the rules of typography and good design sense, I arranged this verse and placed it over the aforementioned image.
After placing the typography, readability demanded some tweaking of the layers to make the text readable. I also experimented with many different options to determine the best one.
It is always a joy when I receive the opportunity to design scripture. Not only am I constantly looking at the verse, I am thinking about truth when envisioning a project concept. Christians are called to hide God’s Word in their heart. Philippians 4:8-9 says to dwell on whatever is true, honorable, right, pure, lovely, excellent, and praiseworthy. That becomes much easier when that truth is right in front of you while designing. It really is a joy.
