The History of Mother's Day
In America, Mother’s Day began with Anna Jarvis who, when her mom died in 1905, envisioned the celebration of Mother’s Day as a way to honor the sacrifices many moms make for their children. Scheduled to be the second Sunday in May, the holiday became a national holiday in 1914[1]. Once Mother’s Day became national holiday, as happens so often, it was quickly commercialized by many merchants including florists and card companies. Jarvis became so upset about this that she disowned the holiday altogether and lobbied for its removal from the calendar.
Despite the over-commercialization of Mother’s Day, it is still an excellent opportunity to recognize the hard work our moms do and our appreciation for them. Because of this, I spent some time designing unique, printable mother’s day cards that you can purchase on Etsy to show mom you care and are thinking of her.
According to one website,
More phone calls are made on Mother’s Day than any other day of the year. These holiday chats with Mom often cause phone traffic to spike by as much as 37 percent.
If you’re not going to see your mom, add to the phone calls. Express your love and appreciation to your mom, and give her a call (and a card) this Mother’s Day.
I love you, mom!
